STEREOTYPE
Against an intense fuchsia background that screams presence, a woman with a burka and deeply expressive eyes holds an old painting right in front of her torso. What’s striking is that, within that frame, the image of another woman appears in a bra, naturally grabbing a roll of fat on her abdomen. The visual coincidence between the two creates a game of perception that deceives the viewer and forces them to look twice.
In this work, Alberto León confronts the stereotypes that weigh on women, both in Western and Muslim contexts. A single figure embodies two realities that are often seen as opposites, but that intertwine here. The criticism is direct and powerful: judgments about the body, control, the external gaze… are universal. More than dividing, the work unites—and reveals that, in the end, the stereotype oppresses all equally, only with different masks.
