PAPER JOURNEY
“Paper Journey” illustrates the story of a child of about 5 years old, but very mature for his age, minutes before boarding the small boat.
From his short experience, the little boy is somewhat aware of the difficulties and the risk involved in the journey that he and his family are facing.
With very sweet eyes and a dazed and fearful look, he contemplates a small paper boat that metaphorically represents adventure, change, prosperity, and the future, but also fragility and weakness, in the face of the turbulence of the journey. He observes the boat with a different look than a Western child would, seeing opportunities but also fear and danger; distance will mark his destiny. From the purest innocence and goodness, he understands and accepts his family’s decision to board that paper boat that will be adrift for days, dreaming of reaching the coast to find a new horizon.
The seagulls around him bring balance, hope, light, and freedom to the scene. They also give us a different perspective; they can rise and fly above the drama and find a way to move forward and seek the best direction. They represent the purpose and the goal, even though in the end we are all a paper boat in the ocean of life.
